V2_Institute for the Unstable Media is an interdisciplinary center for art and media technology in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

In 25 years V2_ has become an international organization for experimentation, research and development in art and media technology.
V2_’s activities include organizing presentations, exhibitions and workshops, research and development of artworks in its own media lab, publishing in the field of art and media technology, and developing an online archive.

Michel van Dartel works as a project manager and assistant curator at V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media which he joined in 2005. As project manager he is involved in a variety of artistic R&D projects at V2_Lab. He is involved in other V2_ public events such as the Dutch Electronic Art Festival (DEAF).

Wearable technology: fashion as interface/ On how the artistic practices of fashion design and interface design meet in today’s wearables technology field.

Presentation made by Michel van Dartel

A new skin for cyborgs.
Fashion and biology have dramatically changed the face of artistic research in wearable technology. While this field used to be dominated by a science-fiction style cyborg ideal of humans augmented with bulky electronics, the electronics used in wearable technology art nowadays are hardly visible, if at all. In contemporary artistic research, wearable technology is seamlessly integrated into our clothing and implanted under our skin. On the basis of classic and recent examples taken from the V2_ context and beyond, Van Dartel will show that the cyborg ideal in contemporary wearable technology is however still very much alive.

Drifter TV is an electronic audiovisual dance act that merges eyepopping animated visuals with pounding techno, acid and punkfunk beats. Sounds and visuals are being mixed on stage in an exciting and energetic live performance. With the use of stunning sound effects and digital projections, Drifter TV delivers a true ‘In Your Face Experience’.

The show tells the story of the ‘Drifters’, strange alien boy-scouts who have landed their vessel on planet earth in order to help out mankind. Their total lack of knowledge about the earth and its inhabitants forms no obstacle for their bizarre and sometimes surrealistic undertakings.

Drifter TV’s music videos have been selected for a long list of festivals and Broadcasted on Dutch national television. For the music video ‘Drifters From Outerspace’ They received the Tommy Award for best film at the Oneminuteawards-finale held in Paradiso, Amsterdam in 2004. In 2005 Drifter TV won the first prize of MTV’s VJ-contest ‘Visual Sensations’.

In 2006 their first DVD, ‘Drifters From Outerspace’ was released by Submarine.
